Meet the Artist

Writer: Samuel PughSamuel Pugh

Kelly Pugh has been doing artwork ever since he was a young child. He has always had a passion for drawing and creating. In school growing up his teachers would often receive drawings of mule deer or elk on the back of his homework assignments. Knowing that he loved art and wanted to make a career out of it, Kelly went on to receive his Master of Fine Art degree from SUU. Kelly’s education didn’t stop with getting his degree though, he has always been looking for ways to improve his skills with a pencil and brush and continues to get better all the time. He focuses primarily on using oil paints but has experience in about every medium there is related to painting, drawing, and creating beautiful artwork.

Kelly feels like he can travel anywhere in the world while he is painting. He can be up in the mountains, over in another country, or anywhere he would like to be. While painting he can get lost in his artwork for hours and not get bored or tired of doing it. He creates the scene a little piece at a time until it unfolds into a masterpiece. There is always something more to be added says Kelly, there just isn’t an end.

Just recently Kelly has gotten to the point to where he feels confident that whatever project he is given he could do it. This has been his goal as an artist, being able to complete whatever is thrown his way, and know that he has the skills necessary to accomplish it. Even though Kelly feels like he can accomplish and do any project though, there are some projects that he enjoys doing more than others. It is evident in the amount of time he has spent towards creating these types of artwork, and how many of these paintings he has lying around in his studio.

Kelly loves painting animals and scenery, especially mule deer and elk like he did as a young child. The video shows some of the paintings he has done, but Kelly has done so many more. Working for the Thanksgiving Point Dinosaur Museum Kelly learned more about how the muscles and bones work and look on animals and has learned how to draw his animals almost perfectly.

Kelly has done many different projects that he has loved doing. Some of his favorite have been large murals for SUU, a school in Alaska, motel rooms, and many other large and notable paintings.

Kelly has also done many religious paintings in the past and going forward would like to put most of his effort and time towards religious artwork. These religious paintings include paintings of Christ, Mary, pioneers, other biblical people and stories, and other modern religious paintings. Along with wanting to focus on religious artwork, Kelly would also like to focus on doing more historical artwork. The video doesn’t tell all these things, but these are his next steps and his next plans moving forward.

In summary Kelly has a great passion for painting. He always has and always will. Kelly doesn’t get tired of painting and enjoys learning more every day. He is at the point he feels very confident in what he can do but does have certain areas he likes more, and areas he would like to focus on going forward.
